The xTool O1 Omni makes professional UV printing considerably more accessible to small businesses, makers and personalisation studios.

From full-colour printing and raised textures to UV DTF transfers, it offers impressive creative possibilities.

One of its biggest strengths is the amount of maintenance it can manage automatically.

White ink circulation, printhead moisture protection and software-controlled cleaning all help reduce the amount of work required to keep the machine operating.

But there's an important difference between a printer that automates maintenance and one that doesn't need maintenance.

Poor workshop conditions, neglected cleaning components and incorrectly secured materials can still lead to clogged nozzles, inconsistent prints and potentially expensive repairs.

At Boyne Valley Laser Studio, we operate the xTool O1 Omni Dual-Head UV Edition.

We've developed this guide using xTool's official technical documentation, alongside five common printhead risks highlighted by professional printing supplier IT Supplies.

Whether you've just purchased an Omni or are considering investing in one, here's what you need to know.

The Essentials in 30 Seconds

Five habits that can help protect your O1 Omni:

  1. 1.Control your environment

Aim for 20–30°C and 50–80% relative humidity.

  2. 2.Keep automatic maintenance running

The Omni is designed to remain powered on, even when you're not printing.

  3. 3.Look after the maintenance station

Inspect and clean the ink pad, scraper and absorber foam regularly.

  4. 4.Use the correct consumables

Not all UV inks or cleaning products are suitable for your printheads.

  5. 5.Secure your materials

Prevent movement, curling and unexpected changes in material height.

These precautions are straightforward, but understanding why they matter can save considerable frustration.

Your Workshop Is Too Cold, Too Hot or Too Dry

The risk: Poor ink flow, missing nozzles and inconsistent print quality.

Your workshop environment has more influence on print quality than you might expect.

UV ink needs to maintain suitable flow characteristics to travel through the printhead's extremely fine nozzles.

When temperatures fall too low, the ink becomes more viscous. This can affect droplet formation and contribute to inconsistent printing or nozzle blockages.

Excessively high temperatures can also affect printing accuracy.

Humidity matters too. Very dry conditions can contribute to ink drying around exposed nozzle areas.

What does xTool recommend?

You Unplug the Printer Whenever You're Finished

The risk: Interrupting automatic maintenance and allowing ink-related problems to develop.

This is one of the most important differences between the Omni and many everyday electronic devices.

Normally, switching equipment off when it's not being used seems sensible.

But the O1 Omni is specifically designed to remain powered on.

In fact, xTool explains that the machine doesn't have a conventional power switch because its automatic maintenance system needs to operate while it's idle.

That system helps protect the printheads and maintain ink circulation.

White ink is particularly important here.

Its opacity comes from titanium dioxide pigment, which naturally tends to settle when left stationary.

The Omni's automatic white ink circulation helps keep that pigment evenly distributed.

What if you're not printing every day?

You don't need to produce unnecessary prints just to keep the machine active.

Instead, use the printer's built-in maintenance features.

The software allows the printheads to enter Sleep mode, while Device Health also provides a Vacation Mode option.

For extended periods without printing, xTool recommends placing the relevant printheads into moisturising mode and keeping the machine powered.

The printer can then continue its automatic maintenance operations.

You Ignore the Ink Pad and Scraper

The risk: Persistent nozzle problems, poor cleaning performance and colour contamination.

These are relatively small components, but they're essential to the Omni's maintenance system.

The ink pad forms a seal against the printhead when it returns to its maintenance position.

This helps protect the nozzle area from prolonged air exposure and allows the cleaning system to create suction.

The ink scraper removes residual ink from the printhead during automatic maintenance.

Both components need to remain clean and in good condition.

Over time, ink residue can accumulate and partially cure.

If the ink pad becomes damaged or distorted, it may no longer seal properly.

If the scraper becomes worn or contaminated, it may struggle to remove residual ink.

The result can be recurring missing nozzles, colour contamination or cleaning cycles that fail to resolve the underlying issue.

How often should they be maintained?

xTool recommends cleaning the ink pad and scraper, and checking or replacing the absorber foam as necessary, approximately once a week.

Under normal operating conditions, xTool also recommends replacing the ink pad approximately every three months, or sooner if it shows signs of damage, wear or hardened ink buildup.

Your printer's Device Health interface provides maintenance information and reminders.

You Use the Wrong Ink or Cleaning Products

The risk: Clogging, contamination, inconsistent print quality and possible equipment damage.

Not all UV inks are interchangeable.

Their formulation affects viscosity, pigment dispersion, curing behaviour and compatibility with the printer's ink delivery system.

An ink that works in one printer may not be suitable for another.

The O1 Omni also uses different ink configurations depending on the edition.

For example, the Dual-Head UV Edition supports specialist rigid white, flexible white and fluorescent UV inks.

These are intended for specific channels and printing applications.

Using incompatible consumables can create problems that outweigh any apparent cost saving.

Be particularly careful with cleaning products

The O1 Omni range includes configurations with UV printheads and a separate configuration combining UV and DT fabric printing.

Their maintenance requirements are not identical.

The DT printhead soaking procedure is not intended for the UV printheads.

xTool also warns against mixing maintenance consumables between its UV and DT systems.

A cleaning liquid that's suitable for one component should not automatically be considered suitable for another.

Your Material Moves, Curls or Warps During Printing

The risk: Incorrect printhead clearance, colour contamination and potentially physical damage.

The O1 Omni's scanning and automatic positioning capabilities are among its most useful features.

But accurate initial positioning doesn't guarantee that a material will remain perfectly flat throughout printing.

Some materials can curl, warp or deform when exposed to heat during the UV printing process.

Thin plastics, flexible sheets and poorly secured materials deserve particular attention.

If the material changes shape during a job, the distance between the printhead and the printing surface can become incorrect.

This may affect droplet placement, producing blurred details or colour contamination.

In more severe cases, a raised object can create a risk of physical contact with the moving printhead.

How do you reduce the risk?

Check that the workpiece is stable and correctly positioned before printing.

Look for raised edges, wrinkles, bubbles, uneven surfaces and anything that might move during the job.

Use suitable fixtures or workholding methods where necessary.

For cylindrical and roll-fed printing, follow the setup instructions for the OR1 Rotary Attachment and RF1 Roll Feeder.

If you suspect the printhead has contacted a workpiece, stop the job and investigate before restarting.

Your xTool O1 Omni Maintenance Checklist

A little preventive maintenance can save considerable downtime later.

The Omni provides maintenance alerts and component information through Device Health, but it's still useful to have a simple routine.

Use the following checklist as a quick reference alongside the instructions displayed by your printer.

Before Every Printing Session
  • Check workshop temperature and humidity.
  • Review Device Health for warnings and maintenance reminders.
  • Check ink and moisturising-liquid levels.
  • Perform a nozzle check.
  • Confirm the material is flat, secure and correctly positioned.
Weekly
  • Clean the ink pad and scraper.
  • Inspect and replace the ink absorber foam as necessary.
  • Clean the optical path and CIS module according to xTool's procedure.
  • Inspect the UV lamp and follow its cleaning guidance and Device Health reminders.
  • Check for unusual ink residue or contamination.
Monthly
  • Inspect and clean the Y-axis motion platform as appropriate.
  • Review guide rail condition and lubrication reminders.
  • Check maintenance components for wear and remaining service life.

The monthly group is a suggested inspection routine, not a substitute for the component-specific intervals shown in Device Health.

Periodically or When Prompted
  • Replace the ink pad when worn, approximately every three months under normal conditions.
  • Replace worn or damaged ink scrapers.
  • Replace other consumables when indicated by Device Health.
  • Check waste-ink capacity and moisturising-liquid supply.
  • Check air-filter status.
  • Review maintenance requirements before extended inactivity.

There is some inconsistency in xTool's published UV lamp cleaning guidance. Its dedicated cleaning tutorial recommends weekly cleaning, while its software documentation refers to daily cleaning. Follow your printer's current reminders and the latest manufacturer instructions.

What If Your Omni Already Has Missing Nozzles?

A poor nozzle-check pattern doesn't automatically mean you need a replacement printhead.

Missing lines, banding and inconsistent colour can have several causes.

xTool recommends checking the maintenance station and cleaning system before moving on to more involved procedures.

Show the 4-Step Nozzle Troubleshooting Guide
  1. Step 1: Inspect the Ink Pad and Scraper

Check for visible damage, deformation, cured ink or contamination.

If the components are intact but dirty, follow the official cleaning procedure.

If they're damaged, follow xTool's replacement guidance or contact support.

  2. Step 2: Run the Appropriate Cleaning Cycle

Use the printer's built-in maintenance functions.

Perform a nozzle check afterwards to see whether the result has improved.

Standard cleaning consumes fewer resources than deep cleaning.

Follow the recommended troubleshooting sequence rather than repeatedly using the most intensive cleaning option.

  3. Step 3: Compare Nozzle-Check Patterns

Look at which lines are missing.

If exactly the same positions remain missing after repeated cleaning, a persistent physical blockage may be present.

If the missing positions change between tests, the issue may involve air entering the ink path, inconsistent suction or another ink-delivery problem.

These situations can require different corrective procedures.

  4. Step 4: Escalate Correctly

If ordinary cleaning doesn't resolve the problem, follow xTool's detailed troubleshooting sequence.

Avoid running intensive cleaning cycles repeatedly without checking whether the results are improving.

Do not attempt unsupported dismantling or aggressive manual cleaning.

If the fault persists, document the nozzle-check results and contact xTool technical support.

One More Thing: Protect Your Omni From Unwanted UV Exposure

There's another precaution owners should understand.

UV ink is designed to cure when exposed to the appropriate ultraviolet light.

That curing process allows the Omni to produce detailed prints on compatible surfaces.

However, UV exposure in the wrong place can create problems.

xTool warns against operating the printer in direct sunlight or under fluorescent lighting because unintended exposure may contribute to ink curing around the printhead nozzles.

Choose the printer's location carefully.

Keep it away from direct sunlight and unsuitable lighting, and follow the manufacturer's guidance on ventilation, maintenance safety and handling UV inks.

Wear appropriate protective equipment when carrying out maintenance involving inks or cleaning liquids.

Is the xTool O1 Omni Difficult to Maintain?

Not necessarily.

One of the Omni's strengths is that xTool has automated several maintenance functions that would otherwise require more operator involvement.

Automatic white ink circulation, moisture protection, software-controlled cleaning and maintenance reminders all help make ownership more manageable.

But these systems don't eliminate the need for routine care.

Ink pads still become contaminated. Consumables need replacing. Optical surfaces require cleaning. Workshop conditions still matter.

For a small business, that distinction is important.

Routine maintenance is something you can plan into your working week.

Unexpected printhead problems, on the other hand, can interrupt customer orders, waste materials and create avoidable costs.

The aim isn't to spend more time maintaining your printer. It's to avoid spending more time fixing preventable problems.

If you're considering investing in the O1 Omni, remember that consumables, maintenance and training are part of the cost of ownership.
